Practice Videos for Music Monday

To prepare for our Music Monday celebrations on May 1st, each grade group will be performing a song for their peers at an assembly (9:30 - 10:00).

Kindergartens will be singing "Mr. Clickety Cane", which is about a crazy man who gets all mixed up and silly when he's getting ready in the morning.  He washes his face with orange juice, and brushes his hair with a toothbrush!  And you don't even want to know what happens to the pizza at the end of the day . . .

Grade One students will be singing an adaptation of Feist's "1, 2, 3, 4", celebrating the number four with monsters, penguins and of course chickens in bathing suits.  Watch the video to the right to practice singing along!

Grade Two students will be sing an adaptation of Will.I.Am's song, "What I Am", a powerful affirmation of our many gifts and strengths.  Watch the video to the left to practice singing along to this piece!

Grade Three students will be performing a traditional African song (adapted and translated to English) called "Take Time in Life."  This song is a reminder to slow down, and appreciate the wonderful world around us and enjoy the special people in our lives.  So far, we have been exploring this piece with drums, xylophones and of course, movement!  It will be interesting to see how the final form evolves!

To wrap up the festivities, we will all sing "Siyahamba" together at the end of the assembly, marching  together as a community in peace, hope and love - three miracles that always happen when we make music together!

Music Monday!

Click HERE to learn the dance steps.
On Monday May 1st, Royal Oak students will join schools across Canada to celebrate Music Monday!

Launched in 2005 by the Coalition for Music Education, Music Monday is the world's largest single event dedicated to raising awareness for music education.  It is a chance to highlight the importance of music education in our schools, and to acknowledge the deep impact that these programs have both in our students' lives and in our society as a whole.

At Royal Oak School, we will begin our celebration with a line dance to Paul Brandt's song, Alberta Bound, and then each grade group will share their own piece with the other students.  Finally, we will wrap up the festivities with a final piece in which we will all unite our voices in song!

Click on the video above to learn the steps for Alberta Bound, and then dance along to the video below. I look forward to seeing your moves on Monday, May 1st!

Grade One Celebration of Learning

Grade One students have been learning about animals, and how they are adapted to their habitats.  Now we are singing, moving and speaking this understanding through songs, and movements and a play that have been developed by the students themselves!

We will soon be sharing their work with our families as part of our Celebration of Learning, and we want to look and sound our very best!  Please use the videos below to practice the songs we will be singing!

Grade One and Two Spring Choir

Spring Choir
Permission Form
Royal Oak School is excited to offer students in Grades One and Two an opportunity to participate in our Spring Choir!  We will meet over the lunch hour on Mondays and Wednesdays from April 26th to May 24th.  Grade Two students will rehearse from 11:45 – 12:15 and Grade One students will rehearse from 12:15 – 12:45.

During this time, we will prepare several songs to perform for the Royal Oak School Volunteer Tea on Friday, May 26th.

To ensure our final performance is as strong as possible, students are required to attend all rehearsals.

If your child would like to commit to the Spring Choir, please ask your home room teacher for a form, and be sure to return it to school by April 20th.

I look forward to sharing this experience with your child(ren)!  If you have any questions, please contact me through the school.

Guitars at Royal Oak School!

On March 22, the Grade One students enjoyed a visit from one of our parents, Erik Mendoza, and Mauricio Moreno, the lead guitarist of the group Los Morenos.

These wonderful musicians brought their guitars - and their love of music - to Royal Oak School, and made our Learning Commons vibrate with so much energy that the students couldn't help but get up and dance!

They told us a little about how the instruments make sound, and a little about their lives as musicians.  After listening to the beautiful songs, we were surprised to learn that Mauricio had taught himself how to play.  He explained that he just tried different sounds until he found the ones that felt good in his heart.

It was a great reminder that we can all be musicians by playing or singing or dancing in our own way.  It just takes practice and patience and a commitment to the music.  Click on the video below to enjoy a bit of inspiration for your own musical journey!
